GE Vernova is an electric-power technology company spanning generation, wind and grid infrastructure. Its business model combines large equipment sales with a vast installed base that produces long-duration service revenue. In 2025, revenue rose 9% to $38.1 billion, remaining performance obligations reached $150.2 billion, and net income was $4.9 billion. The portfolio is organized around Power, Wind and Electrification.
Industry Problem GE Vernova Solves
Electricity systems face a simultaneous challenge: demand is growing while grids, generation fleets and transmission infrastructure must become more reliable, flexible and efficient. Utilities and industrial customers need generation equipment, grid hardware, software and services capable of operating for decades.
GE Vernova addresses this across much of the electricity value chain. Power provides gas, nuclear, hydro and steam technologies; Wind supplies onshore and offshore turbines; Electrification provides grid equipment, power conversion, storage and software. This breadth lets the company participate in both electricity generation and the infrastructure required to transmit and manage it.
The strategic implications are explored in our GE Vernova Business Strategy 2026.
GE Vernova’s Unique Solution
GE Vernova’s strongest economic asset is the combination of technology and installed base. Its equipment can remain in service for decades, creating recurring demand for parts, upgrades, maintenance and contractual services. The company reported more than 7,000 gas turbines and 59,000 wind turbines in its installed base.
This turns an equipment sale into a lifecycle relationship. The 2025 revenue mix illustrates the model: $20.9 billion of equipment revenue and $17.1 billion of services revenue. Services represented about 45% of consolidated revenue and are especially important in Power.
The portfolio also provides diversification, though performance differs materially by segment. See our GE Vernova SWOT Analysis 2026.
GE Vernova Business Model
Power
Power generated $19.8 billion of 2025 segment revenue and $2.9 billion of segment EBITDA. Gas Power is the largest driver, complemented by Nuclear, Hydro and Steam Power. Power had $94.4 billion of backlog at year-end, 74% of which was services, creating unusually long revenue visibility.
Wind
Wind generated $9.1 billion of revenue but a $598 million segment EBITDA loss in 2025. The business includes Onshore Wind, Offshore Wind and LM Wind Power. Its economics depend on turbine pricing, volume, execution, warranty and contract performance, with services providing an important installed-base stream.
Electrification
Electrification generated $9.6 billion of revenue, up 28%, and $1.43 billion of EBITDA. Grid Solutions, Power Conversion & Storage and Electrification Software benefit from investment in transmission, substations, switchgear, transformers and grid modernization. Backlog increased 48% to $34.7 billion.
Policy and infrastructure forces affecting these businesses are covered in our GE Vernova PESTEL Analysis 2026.
How Does GE Vernova Make Money?
GE Vernova earns revenue first by selling equipment: gas turbines, wind turbines, grid systems and other power technologies. Equipment revenue reached $20.93 billion in 2025, up from $18.95 billion in 2024.
The second engine is services. Services revenue increased to $17.13 billion from $15.98 billion. Once equipment is installed, customers require maintenance, replacement parts, upgrades and contractual services. This makes the installed base economically valuable long after the original equipment sale.
The third source of visibility is backlog. Remaining performance obligations reached $150.2 billion at the end of 2025, up from $119.0 billion. Power accounted for $94.4 billion, Wind $21.6 billion and Electrification $34.7 billion. Backlog does not guarantee identical future margins, but it provides substantial visibility into future activity.
GE Vernova Financial Analysis
Total revenue increased 9% to $38.07 billion in 2025 from $34.94 billion. Power grew 9% to $19.77 billion and Electrification grew 28% to $9.64 billion, more than offsetting Wind’s 6% decline to $9.11 billion.
Segment EBITDA reveals the quality of that growth. Power EBITDA increased to $2.90 billion from $2.27 billion, while Electrification EBITDA more than doubled to $1.43 billion from $679 million. Wind remained loss-making at negative $598 million. Thus, the portfolio’s earnings improvement was driven disproportionately by Power and Electrification.
Power’s EBITDA margin expanded to 14.7% from 12.5%, while Electrification expanded to 14.9% from 9.0%. These gains suggest that pricing, volume and productivity are improving the economics of the fastest-growing areas. Wind’s negative 6.6% margin remains the largest structural drag.
Net income reached $4.9 billion, although it included a significant tax benefit, so operating and segment economics provide a clearer view of underlying business progress. Free cash flow was $3.7 billion, giving GE Vernova capacity to invest while returning capital to shareholders.
Future of GE Vernova’s Business Model
GE Vernova’s future is tied to rising electricity demand and investment in generation and grids. Gas Power equipment backlog plus slot reservations reached 83 GW, while Electrification equipment backlog reached $30.5 billion. These indicators point to multi-year demand rather than a single-period surge.
The installed base can amplify that growth. New equipment expands future service opportunities, meaning today’s turbine or grid deployment can create tomorrow’s maintenance and upgrade revenue. The company’s $86 billion services backlog reinforces this lifecycle model.
The central challenge is execution. Power and Electrification must convert backlog into revenue at attractive margins while expanding capacity. Wind must improve economics and execute its offshore commitments. If those conditions hold, GE Vernova can combine cyclical equipment growth with a large recurring service stream, creating a more durable earnings model than equipment sales alone would imply.
