How each model works, and which to choose in 2026

In 2019 and 2020, two New York voice actors, Paul Lehrman and Linnea Sage, took jobs through Fiverr from anonymous buyers who wanted scripts recorded for what they were told was academic research. Lehrman was paid $1,200 and Sage $400. In 2023 Lehrman heard a synthetic copy of his own voice on a podcast. According to their lawsuit, the buyers worked for a California AI voice start-up that had been marketing cloned versions of both voices under made-up names. In July 2025 a federal judge in New York let their breach-of-contract and privacy claims go ahead.

You’ll probably never end up in a courtroom over a voice over. The case still shows where the real decision sits. In 2026 a business can buy a voice in four ways: through a full-service agency, an online marketplace, a freelancer hired directly or an AI voice generator. Each one prices differently because each sells something different. Each also leaves the risk of a weak read, a missed deadline or a licence that doesn’t cover your use with a different party. Whoever holds that risk is most of what you’re paying for.

How does each way of buying a voice over make money?

The four routes earn their money from different places, and that tells you whose problem it is when something goes wrong. Agencies charge you for a managed result. Marketplaces make theirs from access fees, talent subscriptions or a cut of each transaction, depending on the platform. Freelancers bill their own time. AI tools sell synthetic speech by subscription.

Route (example)

How it makes money

Who casts and directs

Who fixes it if it’s wrong

Usually fits

Full-service agency (GoLocalise, London)

Studio fee per hour, plus a usage licence quoted per project

The agency

The agency

Brand, broadcast and multilingual work

Audition marketplace

Free for clients to post; 4% processing fee on card payments, 6% on invoice; talent pay for Premium membership to audition

You

You and the talent

Single-language jobs you can judge yourself

Subscription marketplace

Talent pay a subscription; no commission taken on the fee

You

You and the talent

Single-language jobs, with a direct line to the actor

Gig marketplace

20% commission from the seller, plus a 5.5% service fee charged to the buyer

You

You

Quick, low-stakes reads

Direct freelancer

Their own per-script or hourly rate

You, or the actor self-directs

You, under your contract

Recurring work in one voice

AI voice generator

Monthly subscription or credits

You

You, under the tool’s licence

Drafts, prototypes, internal audio at volume

Fees as published by each platform, checked October 2026.

The pattern is easy to read. The cheaper the route, the more of the work comes back to your desk. Marketplaces do protect buyers in other ways: Voices.com takes the client’s payment upfront through its SurePay system and holds it until the job is complete, so neither side is left out of pocket. What marketplaces leave with you is the casting, the direction and the final check on the read.

What does a voice over agency charge for?

A full-service agency charges for the production around the voice: casting, direction, studio time, editing, quality control and the usage licence. The actor’s fee sits inside that price. You pay more per finished minute, and one company answers for the result.

GoLocalise, a voice over agency that has recorded in its own studios in Stockwell since 2008, is a fair example of how the model is priced. Its quotes have two lines. The first is a studio fee, from £400 an hour, which covers the voice actor, casting, direction, studio time and a sound engineer. The second is the usage fee, set by where the recording will run, in which territories and for how long. Most short projects are delivered within 24 to 48 hours of sign-off (published rates, October 2026).

That second line is where buyers get caught out. A read licensed for an internal training video costs far less than the same read in a national TV campaign. Same script, same hour in the booth, very different licence. Compare two agency quotes on the studio fee alone and you can end up picking the one that’s cheaper today and dearer when the campaign goes on air.

One more distinction before you compare. Some businesses that call themselves voice over agencies are representation agencies: they hold a roster of artists, make the booking, then pass you to the talent and a hired studio. Full-service agencies run the session themselves. Ask which one you’re talking to, because the two quotes won’t cover the same work.

When is a marketplace or a freelancer the better choice?

For a one-off recording in one language, where you know what you want and can judge a read yourself, a marketplace or a direct freelancer is often the sensible call. You pay less. The risk is small because the stakes are small.

Think of a walkthrough video for your own website, a short internal update or a podcast intro. On Voices.com or Voice123 you post the script and receive auditions from working actors, so you hear your own words before you spend anything. Fiverr is quicker again, with fixed-price packages you can buy in a few clicks.

The trade-off is your time. On a marketplace you are the casting director, the director and the quality check. If the read comes back flat, you write the notes. If you later want the audio in a paid advert, you negotiate a new licence with the actor yourself, from scratch. Once a year, that’s manageable. For a quarterly campaign in four languages it turns into a part-time job (and it usually lands on someone who already has a full-time one).

Hiring a freelancer directly is the cheapest reliable option once you’ve found a voice you trust, especially for recurring work that needs one voice. The weak point is concentration. One person, one microphone, and no plan B if they’re ill or booked up the week your deadline lands.

Where does AI voice fit in 2026?

AI voice is cheap and instant, and it works for drafts, prototypes and large volumes of internal audio where nobody expects a performance. It’s weaker on emotion and brand character. It also puts the whole licensing question on you.

The Lehrman and Sage case is the warning. Their voices were recorded through a marketplace job for one stated purpose and, according to their claims, sold for another. A business buying that synthetic voice would have had no way of knowing where it came from. Before you put an AI voice into anything customer-facing, ask the provider to show that the original speaker consented, and read what its licence allows you to do commercially. Get both in writing.

Some agencies now offer AI voice alongside human talent. GoLocalise does, with a human director and quality control on top, and it recommends a professional human voice for emotive or premium work. For anything carrying your brand’s name, that’s a reasonable default.

Which voice over route fits your project?

Match the route to the stakes. Three questions settle most cases: where will the audio run, in how many languages, and who will fix it if it’s wrong?

Your project

Route that usually fits

One internal video, English only, flexible deadline

Marketplace or direct freelancer

Placeholder or prototype audio

AI voice generator

Website or product video you’ll keep for years

Agency, or a trusted freelancer with the licence agreed in writing

Paid TV, radio or online advertising

Full-service agency

Several languages or markets at once

Full-service agency with in-house translation

A regular flow of content across the year

Agency or one freelancer, under a standing agreement

Whichever route you take, a few checks hold. Ask to hear work close to yours, since a polished showreel tells you little about how an actor handles a dry compliance script. Get the intended usage written into the quote. And find out, before you sign, who pays for the retake when the brand team hears the final file and hates it.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a voice over cost in the UK?

It depends on studio time and usage. As one example, GoLocalise quotes from £400 an hour in the studio, with a separate usage fee based on media, territory and licence length (published rates, October 2026). On marketplaces, each actor sets their own price.

Is a voice over agency more expensive than a marketplace?

Per recording, usually yes. The agency price includes casting, direction, editing, quality control and rights management, which on a marketplace you handle yourself.

What is a usage fee in voice over?

It’s the licence that covers where a recording runs, in which territories and for how long. An internal training video carries a much smaller usage fee than a national broadcast advert.

Can I use an AI voice in a commercial project?

Only if the provider’s licence allows commercial use and the original speaker consented to the voice being cloned. Check both in writing before anything goes public.

What’s the difference between a talent agency and a voice over production agency?

A talent agency represents artists and books them for you. A production agency casts, records, edits and delivers the finished audio, and carries responsibility for the result.

Compare voice over agencies, marketplaces, freelancers and AI voice generators in 2026.
